Michigan Farm Bureau’s AgriPac is endorsing Julie Maday and Mike Balow in their Nov. 5 general election race to join the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.

Julie Maday

Julie Maday brings a passion for the Spartan community and extensive experience in local government to the table in her bid for a position on the MSU Board of Trustees.

The Novi native and MSU alumnus has spent three decades supporting MSU alongside her husband. Maday has previously served on the city council, planning commission and economic development committee.

She recently shared her thoughts on working with Michigan Farm Bureau, saying that the AgriPac endorsement is, “one that I’m most proud of,” and that she values the organization’s common-sense approach.

“I want to instill in the institution and the university president that we need to get back to supporting our mission of being a land grant university because we’re always going to need the farming sector,” Maday said. “After all, farming sustains life.”

She added, “I’m going to do whatever I can to help with funding and continued growth for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and support the faculty who want to keep improving the education they’re offering.”

Mike Balow

Mike Balow would bring a wealth of experience to the trustees’ table with seven years of service in the U.S. Navy, and more than 20 years in Plymouth Township as a community leader and businessman in the real estate industry.

For agriculture, Balow plans to prioritize accessibility and engagement with stakeholders.

“I want to get around to different areas of the state to meet with members of the Farm Bureau, to have coffee or lunch with them, and say, ‘hey, this is me — I'm on the board’,” Balow said. “I want to have an open-door policy with your questions and concerns so we can make this partnership everything it can be.

“I view it as a real core mission of MSU and our land grant charter.”

He also wants to become more familiar with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“I want to meet the dean and their staff and take a tour of all of their facilities and capabilities,” Balow said. “Not just locally in East Lansing, but also around the state.”

Balow also currently serves in leadership positions in state and national youth sports programs and volunteers his time as a U.S. Naval Academy Blue and Gold officer who mentors high school students interested in the U.S. Naval Academy.
