Firemen, first responders, EMT’s, police, rescue and dispatch workers from across the Upper Peninsula are encouraged to be part of Farm Bureau’s inaugural U.P. Safety Summit, Aug. 23 in Escanaba.

Three nationally certified experts will conduct safety training 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the U.P. State Fairgrounds, focusing on farm and forestry equipment, complex machine safety, chemical cleanup, confined-space rescue and more.

“This training is highly needed in the Upper Peninsula,” said instructor Lindsey Slifka, who specializes in CRP training and EpiPen use with government agencies.

Chemical cleanup expert Ryan Slifka will address farm and machine safety, fire and chemical cleanups, and the proper use of fire extinguishers.

Nationally accredited rescue trainer Rob Doremus will discuss the intricacies of high-stakes rescue scenarios, including confined spaces like silos and grain bins, high-angle rope rescues, and working around hazardous materials.

Attendees will learn how to address machinery accidents and get hands-on training in shutting down power take-offs and complex machines such as forestry equipment, logging gear, harvesters, combines, haying equipment and more.

The event takes place in and near the Farm Bureau’s Miracle of Life Building at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.

Attendees can earn credits toward training quotas, and admission is only $15, which includes lunch and refreshments.

To register, contact Hiawathaland Farm Bureau Administrator Shannon McHugh-Sanders. For more information, contact Sanders or Hiawathaland Farm Bureau President Dan Bahrman, 906-439-5605.
