Matt Smego has been selected as the Interim Administrator of the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies (MFB) by the organization’s Board of Directors.
Smego brings more than 25 years of experience at MFB to the role, including time as a Regional Representative, Young Farmer department manager, agricultural ecology specialist, legislative counsel, and manager of Government Relations before becoming director of Public Policy in 2020 — a role he’ll continue in while serving as Interim Administrator.
Smego has led several successful legislative initiatives during his tenure, including the adoption of the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) into state law, the adoption of the Great Lakes Compact, amendments to the MISS DIG law, and USDOT number requirements to farm vehicles, among many others.
He will lead MFB’s programs and services and supervise the operations of Michigan Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Association (MACMA) and Great Lakes Ag Labor Services (GLALS) while the search for a full-time replacement is conducted.
“I am honored to work alongside the board of directors to advance the mission of Farm Bureau in representing the interest of our members,” Smego said. “At heart I am still a farm boy from Cassopolis who wants to see our farmers succeed.”
A graduate of Michigan State University, Smego has served on the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association, including as President in 2019-2020.
Smego lives in Grand Ledge with his wife Holly and their two children, Shelby and George.
