In 2019, I hosted a chaperone for the 4-H Exchange Program that was visiting the U.S. with youth 4-H members from Norway. Recently I seized an opportunity to visit her and her family on their own turf, near Nordfjordeid, Norway.
While there, I learned agriculture in that part of Norway consists primarily of dairy, sheep, apples and some raspberries.
Passing through a few farms on our way to see a waterfall in the mountains, I paused to snap a photo of this handsome farm gate, hard at work keeping sheep in their mountain pasture.
Note the grass growing on the roof of the building in the background. I learned that’s a common practice in Norway — a kind of natural (and very necessary) insulation just shy of the Arctic Circle, where the average annual temperature isn’t quite 40 degrees Fahrenheit!
