We go to great lengths to protect our cars from damage, but some risks to your vehicle (and potentially, your pets) may be less apparent than others. A problem particularly relevant to automobiles in Michigan's cold winter temperatures is introduced when animals use them for warmth or shelter. This could lead to a number of car problems ranging from electrical shorts to blocked air vents, not to mention the potential harm that could be incurred on the animals. The good news is that there are a few simple considerations that can help you prevent unwanted consequences.
- Check under your vehicle for any animals hiding underneath before entering.
- Keep any family pets indoors as much as possible during the winter.
- Make noise (tap on your hood, shake your keys, etc.) before starting your vehicle.
- If possible, rodent proof your garage or any area in which you park your car.
- Store pet food and/or lawn and garden seed away from your vehicle.
- If your car has been in storage during colder months, check under the hood prior to starting.
- Keep the inside of your car clean to prevent scavenger pests from trying to enter.
Pets and pests making a home out of your vehicle is just one of the many potential threats to your winter transportation in this state. As Michigan's insurance company, we're well aware of these hazards and want to help you get where you're going, safely, year round. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us at any time and we'd be glad to help.
