Summer library reading program spotlights AG-ventures

This year’s summer library reading program theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library” — a perfect stage for showcasing ag-accurate books for young people!
Date Posted: May 22, 2024

Libraries nationwide are eagerly awaiting the arrival of this year’s summer reading program, “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Selected by the Collaborative Summer Library Program to promote reading outside the classroom, the initiative takes place at libraries where students can gather for entertaining, book-based learning opportunities between school years.

So where does Farm Bureau come in?

Summer library reading programs are opportunities for county Farm Bureau Promotion & Education teams to partner with local libraries in opening young minds to agricultural adventures. From scouting fields to herding livestock, agriculture is full of ag-ventures!

Summer reading can help local students explore those connections through ag-accurate books. Get started with our summer reading program guide, with links to books, lessons and suggested activities highlighting some of the captivating — and educational — adventures agriculture has to offer.

Here are some ag-accurate titles that fit the bill, all available through Michigan Ag in the Classroom:

How to Grow a Monster — Last year, Gabe's mom grew way too many zucchinis. This year, Gabe and his sister have a secret plan to take control of the garden. They have to stop the zucchini madness! With the Makers Make It Work series, any kid can be a Maker! Each book also includes an activity for young makers to try themselves.

Potatoes for Pirate Pearl — Pirate Pearl and her parrot Petunia are HUNGRY, and after they make the hardtack biscuits walk the plank, they go in search of a perfect provision for their next sea voyage. Where do they end up? On Farmer Fay's potato farm! Farmer Fay shows Pirate Pearl how potatoes grow on the farm and how potatoes can be cooked into many different delicious potato recipes.

Tales of the Dairy Godmother: Chuck’s Ice Cream Wish — Tales of the Dairy Godmother follows Chuck on a tour of a dairy farm as he learns how ice cream is made! From cow to cone, Chuck learns of all the hard work and care that goes into raising dairy cows, transportation, and processing of milk to make his favorite treat.
