Sweet corn Prayers are answered

Date Posted: September 2, 2021

What did the ear of corn say when its clothes fell off?

Awww SHUCKS!

Get it?!?

Okay now that’s out of the way, so let’s jump straight to the generosity of outstanding Farm Bureau members.

Eaton County Farm Bureau member Henry Pray, owner of Pray Farms outside Eaton Rapids, recently donated a whole truckload of his famous sweet corn — about 5,000 pounds — to the Lansing Food Bank.

“We try to plant for continuous harvest throughout the season, and the weather was good to us this year,” Pray said. “We have a generous crop, and when that happens, we like to donate it and give back to the community that supports us.

“We also give to the Eaton Rapids High School Marching Band, and the Boy Scouts in Dimondale.”

Sweet corn season starts with some very busy weeks that gradually taper off through August through about Labor Day weekend. This year Pray saw his workforce taper off as well, straining his ability to keep up with demand at his network of 10 roadside stands across the region.

MFB Central Regional Manager Hannah Lange serves Farm Bureau members in Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, Ingham and Shiawassee counties.
