Choosing the right extinguisher for your needs is an important factor to keeping yourself and your property safe. Consider the following factors:
- Size — Smaller extinguishers are portable and easier to handle, but don’t last as long. Larger models contain more extinguishing agent and so can handle bigger fires.
- Rating — Fire extinguisher ratings indicate their effectiveness. For example, a 2A:10B:C rated extinguisher means it’s effective for Class A, B and C fires. The A rating is a water equivalency rating. Each A is equivalent to 1¼ gallons of water. 2A = 2.5 gallons of water. B:C indicates what square footage the extinguisher can cover, handled by a professional. 10 B:C = 10 square feet of coverage. C indicates it is suitable for use on electric equipment.
- Location — Keep an extinguisher in high-risk areas like the kitchen, garage and workshop. At home, have one on each floor and near sleeping areas.
