Grants from Agent Charitable Fund, MFB Family of Companies fight hunger in Michigan

Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan’s Agent Charitable Fund (ACF) and the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies (MFBFoC) are fighting food insecurity across the state, awarding over $31,000 in Feeding the Future and Agents for Change grants in April.

ACF Nonprofit Grants

Ten Michigan nonprofit organizations were recently awarded hunger-relief grants to fight food insecurity in their communities. Feeding the Future Grants are administered by the Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan Agent Charitable Fund (ACF).

Eligible recipients are nominated by their local Farm Bureau Insurance agent and selected by a committee of ACF donors based on the need of the organization, population being served and overall goal of the program. 501(c)(3) nonprofits can utilize Michigan Farm Bureau’s Find an Agent tool to locate an agent in their area. The next round of Feeding the Future Grants is open and applications will be accepted until Friday, June 6.

Alpha Grand Rapids – Grand Rapids

Grant funds will be used to support the Material Resources program and provide essential baby food, formula and cereal to families in need. Alpha Grand Rapids was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Jeremy Underwood.

Ascension Lutheran Church — Saginaw

Grant funds will be used to purchase food for the Weekend Food Bags program, which supports 86 children across three local school districts. Ascension Lutheran Church was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Jennifer Howie.

Catholic Charities of Ingham, Eaton & Clinton Counties (CCIEC) — Lansing

Grant funds will be used to purchase food for CCIEC’s Cristo Rey Food Pantry. CCIEC was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agents Tim Barry and Brian Songer. 

Dock Ministries — Grand Rapids

Grant funds will be used to provide meals for children who come to the Dock after school. Dock Ministries was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Brent Springvloed.

Good Hands Plainwell — Plainwell

Grant funds will be used to purchase food for a backpack program for Plainwell students. Good Hands Plainwell was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Angela Shannon.

Hand2Hand — Jenison

Grant funds will be used to purchase nutritious food for students facing food insecurity over the weekends. Hand2Hand was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Justin Rappuhn.

Mattawan Wildpaks — Mattawan

Grant funds will be used to purchase and fill weekend food packs for students in need in the Mattawan Consolidated School District. Mattawan Wildpaks was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Brandon Yanna.

Michigan House of Hope, Sanilac Food Pantry — Sandusky

Grant funds will be used to purchase food for a pop-up food truck, which provides approximately 21,000 pounds of fresh and shelf-stable food items for families in need. Michigan House of Hope was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Bill Angerbrandt.

Orion Area Youth Assistance — Lake Orion

Grant funds will be used to purchase meals for children enrolled in the organization’s summer day camp, SPLAT (Study, Play, Learn and Talk). Orion Area Youth Assistance was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Wayne Haney.

The ROCK Center for Youth Development — Midland

Grant funds will be used to provide healthy meals and snacks for teens in the summer camp program. The ROCK Center for Youth Development was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Matt Larson.

MFBFoC and ACF School Grants

Five Michigan schools were recently awarded grants to fight childhood food insecurity through in-school hunger-relief programming and agricultural education. Agents for Change grants are administered by the ACF and MFBFoC.

Eligible recipients are nominated by their local Farm Bureau Insurance agent and selected by a committee of ACF donors based on the need of the school and overall goal of the program. School districts can utilize Michigan Farm Bureau’s Find an Agent tool to locate an agent in their area. The next round of Agents for Change Grants is open and applications will be accepted until Friday, June 6.

Bay City Public Schools — Bay City

Grant funds will be used to bring the FARM Science Lab to the district and provide students with STEM-based agricultural lessons and a farm field trip experience. Bay City Public Schools was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Shannon Childs.

Charlotte Public Schools — Charlotte

Grant funds will be used to purchase food for an after-school snack program at Charlotte High School. Charlotte Public Schools was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Kyle Frizzell. 

Davison Community Schools — Davison

Grant funds will be used to purchase nutritious, shelf-stable food items for Central Elementary School’s weekend backpack program. Davison Community Schools was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Russel Kaffenberger.

Mesick Consolidated Schools — Mesick

Grant funds will be used to purchase healthy snacks for students in need at Mesick Consolidated Jr/Sr High School. Mesick Consolidated Schools was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Melissa Schultz. 

Traverse City Area Public Schools — Traverse City

Grant funds will be used to purchase healthy snacks for students in need at Long Lake Elementary. Traverse City Area Public Schools was nominated by Farm Bureau Insurance agent Christina Feike.  

The ACF, whose mission is to end hunger in Michigan, is a donor-designated fund administered through the Michigan Foundation for Agriculture. The Michigan Foundation for Agriculture, a 501(c)(3) governed by Michigan Farm Bureau’s board of directors, positively contributes to the future of Michigan agriculture through leadership and educational programming.
